De PokerStars.com European Poker Tour in Vilamoura zit er op en de titel is naar een local gegaan. De 54 jarige Portugees Antonio Matias heeft beslag weten te leggen op de eerste plaats en daarmee op €404.793.

Het is vrij opmerkelijk dat iemand uit het land van herkomst de titel pakt, tot nu toe lukte dat alleen Sandra Naujoks in Dortmund afgelopen seizoen.

Matias heeft een reisbureau en was uiteraard erg blij met de titel: "I like to think of myself as a citizen of the world, but it is very satisfying win an EPT in my home country," aldus Matias. "I wasn't intimidated by the competition because I play a lot of very good players in cash games. I just decided to play the way I play, and hope that luck didn't turn its back on me.

Matias was er op gebrand om de titel in Portugal te houden: "I play poker just for a hobby, but when I got the chip lead yesterday, at that point, the only thing I had on my mind was winning."

De totale prijzenpot bedroeg ruim €1,5 miljoen en was bij elkaar gebracht door 322 spelers die ieder €5.300 inlegden. Hiermee is de EPT Vilamoura het grootste toernooi dat ooit gehouden werd in Portugal.

PokerStars was zelf ook erg blij met de eerste stop in Portugal: "It's always exciting when the European Poker Tour visits a new destination and we have wanted to hold an EPT in Portugal for some time, so we are delighted that so many players took part including 63 players from Portugal."

Volgende week vertrekt de hele karavaan naar Praag voor een volgende EPT. Een geliefde plaats bij veel pokerspelers en in de periode voor kerst bijzonder mooi.
