De railers is het vast al opgevallen: Rob Hollink is weer regelmatig aan de tafels te vinden. Uiteraard speelt hij Pot Limit Omaha, maar wellicht nog frequenter speelt hij 7-game en 8-game. Samen met Rolf Slotboom schreef hij een boek: Secrets of Short Handed Pot Limit Omaha.

Voordat jij naar Las Vegas vertrok was het al weer even geleden dat je live toernooien had gespeeld en je had er echt zin in.

Rob: "Klopt ja, ik had zin om te gaan spelen en het was ook hard werken in Las Vegas. Ik heb veel tijd in poker stopt en ook veel toernooien gespeeld, maar het zat niet echt mee. Ook heb ik minder cashgames gespeeld dan andere jaren omdat deze niet zo gunstig waren. Ik wil de schuld niet aan variantie geven want dat is een excuus voor railbirds en ik behoor niet echt tot de railbirds volgens mij. Maar Las Vegas was qua resultaten voor mij teleurstellend, dat lijkt mij duidelijk."

Sinds de afgelopen WSOP ben je niet langer de enige Nederlander meer met een bracelet.

Rob: "Ik ben blij dat Marc Naalden de bracelet gewonnen heeft. Hij laat al jaren zien dat hij de kwaliteiten bezit om een bracelet te winnen en dan is het mooi dat juist hij zo'n toernooi op zijn naam schrijft! De Nederlanders hebben het sowieso goed gedaan in Las Vegas."

Gaat het weer een tijd duren voordat je live gaat spelen?

Rob: "Ik heb eigenlijk niets gepland aan toernooien en verwacht ook niet direkt een EPT te spelen. Misschien ben ik wel te zien tijdens de MCOP, maar daar ben ik ook nog niet uit, de cashgames vond ik vorig jaar bijvoorbeeld niet bijzonder."

Online ben je de afgelopen tijd weer behoorlijk actief, aan welke tafels kunnen wij je volgen?

Rob: "Ik speel de mixed games $400-$800 op PokerStars en op FullTiltPoker en Pot Limit Omaha uiteraard. De komende 10 maanden wil ik veel de mixed games gaan spelen zodat ik mij goed kan voorbereiden op de high limit mixed games in het Bellagio volgend jaar."

Wat doe jij nog om jezelf te verbeteren in het spel?

Rob: "Tijdens het spel ben ik bezig met analyseren. Als ik twijfels heb over een hand kijk ik hem direkt terug in de replayer en ga ik de hand voor mijzelf nog eens helemaal na. Voor mij zit de verbetering niet echt in de pokerkennis: dat is op goed niveau. Bij mij zitten de verbeter mogelijkheden meer in de concentratie. Ik heb nog wel eens moeite om de concentratie goed vast te houden en dan laat je nog wel eens steekjes vallen. Je mist een bet op het juiste moment of je betaald een straat te veel af. Je moet fit en geconcentreerd zijn, dat is belangrijk. Daarom is Jorryt bijvoorbeeld ook altijd bezig met sport. Ik speel om die reden ook liever 's morgens, ik ben dan scherper."

Kort geleden is een boek verschenen dat jij samen met Rolf Slotboom geschreven: "Secrets of Shorthanded Pot Limit Omaha." Wanneer ontstond het idee?

"Rob: Tijdens de WSOP van 2008 vroeg Rolf of ik hem wilde bijstaan met het schrijven van een boek over PLO. Ik was een beetje sceptisch in eerste instantie, ik ben niet echt een schrijver zeg maar. Ik ben handjes van mijzelf gaan verzamelen en toen had ik 33 handjes waar ik mijn mening over gegeven heb. Het is geen strategie stuk, maar ik vertel wat ik waarom doe en wat mijn tegenstanders doen. Ik geef inzicht in de gedachtegang tijdens het spelen. Ik laat spelsituaties zien waardoor lezers tot een bepaald inzicht kunnen komen."

"Het gedeelte wat Rolf heeft geschreven is meer geschikt voor de student. Hoe ga ik short handed PLO spelen. Het boek is dus heel veelzijdig geworden, met aan de ene kant de theorie van Rolf en aan de andere kant de praktijk van mij. Het is niet specifiek een boek voor beginners geworden, maar ook zij kunnen zeker baat hebben bij dit boek. Ook voor de gevorderde spelers is er nog genoeg om over na te denken."

Rolf Slotboom over de samenwerking met Rob:

"Ik wilde een boek schrijven over PLO maar ik vond dat ik dit niet alleen kon, en besloot de stoute schoenen aan te trekken door iemand te benaderen die ik zeer hoog heb zitten - Rob Hollink. Hoewel wij vaak zeer verschillend denken over poker, leek het mij dat hij de perfecte aanvulling zou zijn op de specifieke kracht & zwakheden die ik bezit. En tot zowel mijn vreugde als verbazing, zei Rob al snel ja."

"Let wel: Zowel Rob als ik gebruiken geen ABC-achtige benadering, en dit betekent dat de lezer de dingen goed moet nalezen / analyseren, en het is verre van eenvoudig onze ideeën succesvol te integreren in iemands basic strategy."

Intro

We are five-handed this time and I am in the SB. From my opponents I am familiar with CHUFTY, who is one of the big winners in this game, and in addition we have my friend howisitfeellike, the day that he is going to beat the big game is coming closer. About the other two players, I unfortunately don’t know much. The reason that I included this hand in the book is that I like to emphasis that all actions, even checks, give away information.

Preflop

The action starts as follows; Bballer88 folds, CHUFTY raises to $1400, howisitfeellike calls $1400, I call $1200 from the SB with Kd 5h 6s Kh and the BB folds. My preflop call with kings single suited is pretty normal, I guess.

Flop

We see a flop. I have flopped an overpair and a king high flush draw. The pot is $4600 and our remaining stacks are $35000 for me, $46000 for CHUFTY and $16000 for howisitfeellike. I am first to speak. Playing this hand for stacks against CHUFTY is something that I don’t like at all. When we are going all-in on this flop, I am sure I got the worst of it. The hand I am really afraid about is logically AA with the nut flush draw. So when I bet out here and CHUFTY raises, then I am in deep trouble. The best action is a check, to gather some information by my opponents acts. CHUFTY decides to check as well. His check gives away a lot of info, I think. His hand will not be so strong in my opinion. He would for sure bet a hand he was willing to play for stacks. A hand like AAxx, AKxx, AQxx or ATxx, with the nut flush draw, is a hand he should bet.

A hand he might check the flop is for instance AA without hearts. CHUFTY checks, so it looks like that he could have totally nothing and doesn’t like to bet this flop, which is very logical or he has “half a hand” (for instance AAxx, without hearts) and wants to keep it cheap. Howisitfeellike is an excellent player and I am sure he knows also that CHUFTY is not very strong. About me, he doesn’t know much. His stack is under $16000 now and there is already $4600 in the middle. How much does he have to have in this hand to bet the pot? I think not so much. Two pair, a pair and a flush draw, a pair and a straight draw, all these hands should be enough for him to bet the pot – because there is a reasonable chance that we are both folding.

Howisitfeellike does indeed bet the pot, and as explained, I give him a pretty wide range. Now it’s up to me. Actually the situation is now the way, I was hoping for. It would have been just a bit more optimal when howisitfeellike would have had just a couple of thousands more, so that there would be a small chance that he would fold to my check-raise. With 11k behind he is clearly committed now. But of course, I still like it, as I am pretty sure that CHUFTY cannot call anymore when I check-raise and my hand will not be behind against the range of howisitfeellike. This is the way it goes: I raise, CHUFTY folds and howisitfeellike calls. When I see his hand, I am really disappointed.

Although I was behind on the flop, I think I made the right move. Luck was on my side: an additional backdoor straight draw can be very nice sometimes.
