Jonathan Duhamel hoopt dat zijn overwinning in het Main Event van de World Series of Poker zijn carriere een zet in de juiste richting zal duwen. Hij spreekt uit naar de toekomst toe 'a true ambassador for the game' te willen worden. Om een juiste start te maken doneerde hij om te beginnen $100.000 aan een goed doel.

Afgelopen maandag werd Jonathan Duhamel de eerste Canadees in de historie die het Main Event van de WSOP op zijn naam wist te schrijven. 

Hij zegt op een persconferentie: "It means so much to me. It’s a dream come true for me. All my life, I’ve dreamed of it and to have the chance to be called the champion is amazing… I’m the happiest guy on Earth right now.” 

“It was a very tough table, so I knew if I made any mistakes, I was going to pay the price. I had good spots and won my flips, which you have to do to win tournaments. I played the best I could. I have to give credit to all of the other guys and especially to John Racener.” zo geeft hij aan.

Hij zal, net als zijn voorganger Joe Cada, in de grote televisieshows als The Late Show van David Letterman en ESPN's SportsCenter te zien zijn. Hij zal hierbij poker zo goed mogelijk voor het voetlicht proberen te brengen: “I’m going to do my best to try to be the best poker ambassador. It’s a dream come true for me, so I’ll do my best. I’m up for the challenge." 

Het gaat niet alleen maar glamour worden, hij beseft dat hij in een goede run zit en wil daar nog even gebruik van maken. Hij zal dan ook zoveel mogelijk toernooien gaan spelen het komende jaar. "I’ll do all of the biggest tournaments and will be back next year for the World Series. I’m going to play a lot of poker," zo vertelt hij.

Ook blikt hij terug op de headsup tegen John Racener, hij had een duidelijke strategie uitgestippeld om de winst naar zich toe te trekken. “I wanted to mix it up a little bit and not to be too obvious with my game, so I limped a little bit to try to confuse him. I was raising a lot also, but just tried to balance and do the best I could.” 

De tactiek bleek te werken en in 40 handen wist hij de winst naar zich toe te trekken. Voor zijn overwinning kreeg hij bijna $9 miljoen waarvan dus $100.000 ging naar een project voor kinderen in zijn woonplaats Motréal.
