Afgelopen dagen sluimert de rel tussen Daniel Negreanu en Annie Duke maar voort. Steeds meer pokerspelers beginnen zich te mengen in de discussie waar mr. Trashtalk himself, Tony G, inmiddels heeft aangeboden om te gaan bemiddelen. Maar waar gaat de rel nu over?

Ongeveer twee weken terug had Team PokerStars Pro Daniel Negreanu een interview met PokerPlayer waarin hij inging op de problemen rondom het Ladies Event van de afgelopen WSOP waarin ook enkele heren mee speelden. Annie Duke was tijdens de WSOP al woest dat er heren mee speelden in het Ladies Event en dat zij namens alle vrouwen in poker sprak. Die reactie van Annie Duke schoot Daniel in het verkeerde keelgat:

"What irked me is that this woman has the audacity on her website to call herself 'the best female poker player in the world.' So I'm like 'how offensive are you, you fucking cunt? You want to say you're speaking for women, yet you claim superiority over all of them.'"

Het gaat dus om de woorden fucking cunt, dat in Amerika de meest grove belediging is die je een vrouw kan maken. Het F-woord en het C-woord is echt totaal "not done"

Annie Duke liet kort nadat ze op de hoogte was gebracht van Daniels uitspraken weten via Twitter: "Thank you for the support. I was certainly shocked at the language myself. I welcome criticism, but not abuse."

PokerStars kreeg ook lucht van de zaak en reageerde alsvolgt: "Although Daniel Negreanu is a Team PokerStars Pro, he is an entity to himself and as such will always be encouraged to express his views and speak his mind as he would otherwise do so, PokerStars Pro or not."

Deze reactie van PokerStars was volgens Annie Duke niet afdoende als excuses en dus schreef ze op haar blog een open brief naar PokerStars waarin ze een straf of berisping eiste:

"I am not offended by Daniel's opinion. He has a right to disagree with me and dislike me. And I, just like PokerStars, would encourage him to express his views and opinions. This is not about his views. It is about a particular word he chose to express those views. The word "c**t" is not an opinion, it is an abusive epithet, and PokerStars is completely ignoring the use of that term in their response."

Duke gaat verder, "But more distressing is the use of the word 'encouraged' here. So, PokerStars, you are encouraging Daniel to continue to express views in this manner, to conduct these public attacks using offensive slurs and inappropriate language? I am more than dismayed that PokerStars is making a statement here that they encourage this kind of behavior, this kind of language use. According to PokerStars, this kind of behavior enriches our community."

De reactie van PokerStars op deze open brief: "PokerStars does not support the use of derogatory or hurtful language directed at any other player. While this was a personal matter between two players, we wish that better judgment had been used in the choice of words."

Vanaf dit punt in deze pokerfittie begonnen ook enkele high profile pokerspelers zich er mee te bemoeien. Zo liet FullTilts Howard Lederer, toevallig familie van Duke, via Twitter het volgende weten aan Daniel Negreanu: "Hey Daniel, nice job representing poker and reinforcing that our attitude towards women is still Neanderthal." Lederer vervolgt: "I understand some agree w DN on the ladies poker event issue. Many do. But abusing those you disagree with is never cool."

Tony G, nooit vies van een pokerrel en de nodige trashtalk aan tafel besteedde ook aandacht aan de rel in zijn blog en besloot zichzelf voor te stellen als mediator: "Let's smooth over this situation, let's try and forget that it ever happened. I know this fantastic place in Utah where you can get away from the world and I will pay for you to both go there and relax and chill out. You are both important ambassadors for the game we love – please let's resolve this in a diplomatic manner otherwise someone is going to get really hurt."

Daniel Negreanu heeft overigens zijn excuses nog niet aan Annie Duke aangeboden. Dat de twee elkaar amper kunnen luchten of zien is al langer bekend.
