Peter Eastgate, die in 2008 het Main Event van de World Series of Poker won en daarmee een bedrag van dik 9 miljoen dollar, slaat dit jaar de gehele World Series over op het Main Event na. Reden: het wereld kampioenschap voetbal in Zuid Afrika dat vanavond start met de openingsceremonie en de hitte.

De Deen is naar Zuid Afrika toe om daar zijn land aan te moedigen, onder andere tegen het Nederlands Elftal. De voetalliefhebber op zijn PokerStars blog:

"First and foremost, there's the football World Cup - an event I look forward to very much, especially to see all the big teams play great football. Of course I support Denmark and hope they'll do well, but honestly I don't think they play that well for the moment."

Een andere reden om alle events over te slaan is voor hem de hitte. Hij geniet liever van de Europese zomer dan de verstikkende hitte van Las Vegas in de Nevada woestijn.

"Secondly, I prefer the summer in Europe rather than the one in Nevada where temperatures can reach up to 50c degrees during the day. And finally, I don't have the motivation to play all the small events at the WSOP. That would be a waste of money. To me it's not that important to win bracelet number two."

Peter Eastgate hoeft dus niet zo nodig een tweede bracelet te winnen. Hij vindt de events dus niet de moeite waard en heeft het ook niet zo op alle side bets die het voor de grote heren interessant houden. Hij denkt dat zonder deze side bets de grote spelers ook niet al die events gespeeld zouden hebben:

"I'm sure if they didn't have huge bracelet bets going on that many of the other big poker names would feel the same as me. I see no reason to enter into such bets as I'm primarily a hold'em player. If you're to enter bracelet bets, you have to play all the events and I have never had a flair for mixed games."

Peter Eastgate zal enkele dagen voor dat hij dag 1D speelt van het Main Event in Vegas arriveren en laat Joe Cada voorlopig als recente Main Event winnaar de massale publiciteit op zich nemen.
